Headboard again.

Okay, so back to the headboard thing. I just did a bedroom makeover using what the client already had in her home. The only thing she had going for the room was the beautiful wall color and nice fir floors. But after I was done with the scavenger hunt throughout the house - I came up with this - artwork and a mirror as 'headboard'. It gives the illusion of a finished bed.

string craft project in L.A.

We just spent the last several days in LA visiting my son and daughter-in-law. So what's a trip to someone else's pad without sharing some decorating fun? 'The kids' had seen a lamp shade on HGTV and were hot on trying it out. After describing it to old mom, it occurred to me that it was very reminiscent of something I had done in the 70's.

You'll need a 12" balloon, string, lots of white glue (we used Elmer's), a small plastic lid from a container - like a margarine tub, and a light kit. (You can get these at Ikea or World Market)

Blow up the balloon and tie it off. Soak a bunch of string in the glue (putting it in a bowl helps) and start to wind the string around the balloon. Keep going until you like the look. We left a 'fist' sized opening at the top. Let it dry overnight. Slowly let the air out of the balloon. Cut a slit in the plastic lid, just big enough to thread the socket end of the cord through. Attach a light bulb. Bend the lid (like a taco) and insert it into the opening of the string shade. Adjust so it's nice and straight, hang, and enjoy!

Client's Choice Month - Create a decorating plan!

presenting:
Client’s Choice Month

Hiring a decorator can be daunting if you have never worked with one before. The fear of not knowing how long a project will take can keep people from starting the project at all! I promise a fun and informative 2 hours helping you get a clearer vision of what it is you want to do in your home or office. For some clients, that’s all they really need – the rest they can either do themselves, or wait until they are ready to move forward with me. At least they will have an idea and a plan! So, for the month of November, for a one time fee of $100, you can choose how you want our session to go.

2 hours can buy:
A consultation, including any shopping lists/suggestions/sketches.
Playing with furniture arrangements. Let’s roll up our sleeves and see what we come up with.
Wall color selections.
Party décor – I’ll do it or plan it with you.
Know a bride who will need help with pulling together a wedding? I can get the ideas rolling and put together a list of resources.

Headboards

I'm into headboards these days. I go into homes for consultations and lots of folks don't have one. The bedroom just looks unfinished to me without it. Assuming the bed to be the cornerstone of most bedrooms, it should have more than just a mattress and boxspring going on. And get that bed up off the floor. Bedrisers are 4 for $10 and they make so much difference to the scene. Think of it as putting on heels and and crown - how great does that make you feel? Your bed should feel like that, too! Now this headboard doesn't have to be expensive. You may not even have to shop for it, because it doesn't even need to be a 'board'. Maybe you have a great tablecloth that you could tack up behind there, or gather on a curtain rod up close to the ceiling.

I recently designed this headboard while doing a bedroom makeover-for-less. And for under $20, so can you! At Home Depot they sell insullation board in different sizes - usually found next to the lumber department. You can't miss it - it's bubblegum pink. Comes in a few sizes, I used the 2' x 8' ($8.97) one and cut it down to accommodate a king size bed. It breaks/cuts easily - just measure how long you need it to be, score it about 1/2" with a knife, and break it over your knee. Now cover it with a great fabric (here I used a curtain panel I found on sale), wrapping it tightly around to the back side and secure it with lots of pins. Nail it to the wall in 3 - 5 places - spaced evenly across the middle, horizontally. HIde the nail heads by hot-glueing on some fabric-covered buttons.
